Bird ditty

Naples city dock

"A wonderful bird is the pelican

His bill (beak) will hold more than his belican (stomach can).

He can take in his beak

Food enough for a week,

But I'm damned if I see how the helican. (hell he can)"

~Dixon Lanier Merritt

This is a very funny verse, but I imagine it might be difficult for my foreign visitors. So I've added some words in parenthesis to make it a bit clearer...

I've never seen one up here in Rhode Island - I wonder what their range is?

They are energetic birds, noisy, and appear clumsy but you caught this one beautifully in flight!

Nice combination of words and picture! (Never saw a pelican in wild life. Are there many around?)

Truly wonderful bird, but the picture and the text also helps to the enjoyment!

You make it look like an airport for birds, "Flight Pelican 2-3-4 coming in for a landing". I can imagine all the little pelicans behind you screaming, "Mommy's home, mommy's home...".

I like your photo and this is the first time I have ever seen or read the whole bit about the pelican.

Funny how your pelicans are different to ours here. Do they dive from great heights to catch some fish? The pelicans I saw in Costa Rica used to do that but I've never seen Australian pelicans do it...

Love this very clever poem!
(untranslatable, unfortunately!)

Superb photo of a beautiful bird. Love the ditty. I've never read this before - wish I'd known it when I live in Queensland - many pelicans there. So much of Naples reminds me of Cairns except that Naples looks posher! Guess I'm referring to weather and wildlife really.

Thanks for your separate message about pelicans. I had a new look now via your link. Thanks!

It's funny verses. Many schoolchildren here in Germany know them because it's in schoolbooks as a limerick ;-)

I know the poem but never heard of Dixon Merritt - I always thought it was by E C Bentley -- maybe he only illustrated it -- I must search my bookshelves for a copy
