Reckless endangerment

In the course of a lifetime, we must pass numerous tests: to make the grade, to get a job, to obtain a driver's license, to adopt a pet...

Sadly, there are no requirements we have to pass to become a parent!

If you enlarge this photo, you will see a father, baiting the alligator to approach for a closer look. Alligators can run as fast as 40 miles per hour on dry land - how fast do you think the father can run in those "crocs"(shoes)? And what's worse, how is he going to protect his children...

He should be charged with a felony, endangering children. We have manatees in the Keys and the law is that you can't touch or feed them.

oh yes Izzidee, i have heard of alligator shoes, yes yes when alligators wear Nike' and addidas shoes they can run even faster. i have heard of people who shoot poor alligators and remove 4 shoes from their feet and sell them.
How bad no ???

stupid father ! And he expects his children to be proud of him.

Just incredible! What a irresponsible attitude!

I forgot to ask: is it safe an alligator in that pond, so near the margin?

I hope he is no relative of your's as I was going to call him something worse than "dumbass." And in front of his children.

c'est totalement insouciant comme attitude et dangereux. j'avoue que je ne m'amuserais pas à ce petit jeux

they is completely carefree like attitude and dangerous. I acknowledge that I would not have fun with this small plays

This is just survival of the fittest. If you are a stupid parent, the alligator eats one of your children. If you are very stupid, the gator eats you.
If you are intelligent, you are across the pond taking photos :-)

Just plain crazy. Some people don't have the brains they were born with.

I think the first clue that there is something 'not quite right' with the guy is his choice in footwear, not to mention the color!

How utterly stupid! I'm sure you told him so too.

lol @ Chris and Deb's comment... i did not notice the alligator till i read the note...i was too fascinated by the mixed expression of wonder + curiosity on the little boy's face... grossly irresponsible as u put it. He looks confident....he may have had some kinda experience doing this before...that's not to say that he can endanger his kids' lives though.

Your words Isabella are often mine when I see such imbecile and irresponsible behaviour especially in front of kids. And often I go to think that not everyone has kids, deserve them.

Definitely, parenthood should come with instructions...
Sorry, I took another weekend on the beach in Algarve and was too lazy to carry a laptop to post or visit. Anyhow, I managed to get back and see some wonderful posts: Main Street, and in particular, The Art of Serenity. Does it match your mood? ;))

I am originally from Dallas. Back there we would call his act of stupidity his attempt to "thin the herd". Usually though, these types don't take their children down with them. Hope there was, at least, no bad ending.

Thanks all for visiting...

No, there was no "bad ending". I gave him a polite but stern warning. He told me he was fishing and his "bait" was attracting the gator. Well, duh...This also suggests that the gator is used to being fed by people, which is always a BAD IDEA!

Sonia - normally, if you ignore the alligator, he will ignore you back ;-) I always take their photos from a boardwalk they can't climb so easily...

GMG - let's just say it's a conscious effort ;-)

Well, this just proves that ignorance knows no bounds. I have often thought that some people (many people, unfortunately) do not deserve to have the pleasure of parenting since they are woefully irresponsible about it. There is a law here in MN and many other states I assume that can charge parents with child endangerment, and it is frequently used to protect children.

Amazingly stupid, but sadly all too common.

Years ago at Yellowstone, I was amazed at the idiots that would just walk right up to a 3000lb bull bison to take it's pic. I haven't been surprised much at folk's since then.
